In Word 2003, I know there was an easy way of inserting a footer and then choosing file/path as an item to display in the footer.

I was able to find how to add this in Word 2007, by inserting a footer then going to Quick Parts >Field, selecting FileName, and then checking the "Add path to filename" box.

Question: Is there a way to get this setting to save for all newly-created documents? Or, can you somehow add filename/path to the "Document Property" list so it can be quickly selected from Quick Parts without all the extra keystrokes any time you want to add it to a document? Thanks!

I very much agree with this. This is a field we use a LOT.

The only way I can find to shorten this process is to save your own custom footer/header. Here's a good link I found:

I belive this will work as a quick tip. Select Insert>Choose Links>Select Hyperlink>Browse to the path the doc is located>select OK. You can leave the Hyperlink or remove it in your footer.

Remember that you can also open the Word main template file and add whatever you want to it as a default, including a persistent file & path footer fields.

1. Click the Office button

2. Select Open

3. In the Open dialog box, click Templates

4. Double-click the Normal template

Don't forget too that when you go to the Insert Ribbon and select Quick Parts go down to the Field... button, and right click on it to select "Add to Quick Access Toolbar". Then it will be available on the quick access toolbar but you still will get a dialogue box to choose the field file name into your document. It might speed the process up just a little.
