For some bizare reason, when you use the Envelope feature in Word 2007, it does not use your Word default font, but a font called +Headings. This font looks normal on the screen, but prints out wacky-looking.

While waiting for Microsoft to fix this bug, here's how you can manually change the Envelope default font.

1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S -- brings up the Styles list

2. Click the Manage Styles button near the bottom of the Styles pane.

3. In Manage Styles' Edit tab, find and select the Envelope Address style -- Styles are not listed alphabetically. The Envelope Address style is about two-thirds of the way down the list. It also appears grayed-out because it's a hidden style, but you can still modify it.

4. Click Modify and change the font to your preferred choice. This changes the default normal template, so you don't need to check any of the boxes below.

5. Click OK.

I would like to note that these are the steps to take to fix a line spacing issue on envelopes also, not just font kerning issues.

I had an issue come up where the font was fixed for the Envelope Address but it was still printing Wacky in the Return Address.

I changed the font by hitting Ctrl + Alt+ Shift + S, went to Envelope Return, Clicked the Modify button, changed the font, clicked ok, then tried to print the envelope. It printed fine but when I closed out of Word and went back in the Return Envelope font had reset back to +Headings. I changed the font on the normal11.dot file and the normal.dot file but again when I opened a new document the return address font was set to +headings.

Here's what I found from Word's Discussion Group (accessible from the Get Started tab).

Start with a blank document.

1. From the Home tab, click on the Styles group launcher button (bottom-right side of Styles group).

NOTE: If you prefer the styles to be listed in a task pane rather than a drop-down menu, click and drag the drop-down menu to the right side of your screen. You may have to really bang the right side a couple of times before the drop-down menu changes into a task pane.

2. In the Styles task pane or menu, click on Manage Styles (third button at the bottom).

3. In the Manage Styles dialog window, change the sort order from "As Recommended" to "Alphabetical" - makes it easier to find the style you want to modify.

4. Scroll to the "Envelope Return" style and select it. NOTE: It's grayed out, but you can still modify it.

5. Click the Modify button and change the font.

6. Click OK to return to the Manage Styles window.

7. Click the radio button for "New documents based on this template" and click OK.

8. Close the blank document, open a new blank document and see if your font has changed.

This worked for me.
