What's happening to allow deletions from the archive?

It is impossible to delete messages from the new archive.
Messages are moved to the archive within hours of receipt.
Messages in the Deleted folder are being archived.

Given the above, the archives are going to be humongous in a very short time.

What's happening to give us more control?
