Office 2008's implementation of WYSIWYG menus slows down launch times (to the point where it can take around a minute to start it up). This feature is what lets you see what the font looks like in the menu and formatting palette. To disable this feature and see a speed boost open up Word.
Word (menu) > Preferences... (menu item) > General (panel) > WYSIWYG font and styles menus (uncheck)
This should disable that feature in Excel and Powerpoint as well.

| Just an update for the OS 10.5 users, 10.5.4 (released 06/30/08) seems to have fixed some of the slowness (at least in excel).
