Mine weren't. I'd open a workbook, see the security message saying my links weren't updated, then I'd click on the option button the security message provided and I'd say "Enable Updates". Each and every time I opened the same lovely workbook.
Until I found this at ms.com -
1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Excel Options.
2. Click Trust Center.
3. Click Trust Center Settings.
4. Click External Content.
5. Click to select the following options, as appropriate for your situation:
• Prompt user about Data Connections
• Prompt user on automatic update for Workbook Links
6. Click OK to close the Trust Center dialog box.
7. Click OK to close the Excel Options dialog box.
Now suddenly it's "Not Recommended" to automatically update workbook links. I guess I'm less capable than I was when I was just using Excel 2003! </sarcasm>
